Description:

RCW 163 is a faint emission nebula located in the constellation Scutum. It forms the brightest visible portion of a much larger cloud of glowing hydrogen gas, much of which is difficult to detect in ordinary visible light but becomes clearer in infrared and narrowband observations.

Part of the nebula is concealed behind Barnard 312, a prominent dark cloud whose dense dust blocks the light of the stars and ionized gas behind it. This contrast between dark dust lanes and delicate hydrogen filaments gives the region its distinctive appearance. RCW 163 is an impressive example of how glowing gas and obscuring interstellar dust combine to shape the complex structure of the Milky Way.
